College Football: Biggest Winners and Losers from Week 3

On paper, Week 3 of the College Football season looked pretty average. There were no games that featured ranked teams. Plus, the Week 4 slate is loaded with ranked matchups, so fans might’ve been looking ahead a week. Despite the weaker slate, there were games we didn’t expect to be close that came right down to the wire. Here are Dimers' three winners and three losers from Week 3 of college football.

Winners

Ohio State’s Offense

In Ohio State’s first two games of the season, the Buckeyes struggled to find offensive consistency with Kyle McCord at quarterback. On Saturday, McCord and Ohio State found their groove.

McCord threw for 318 yards and three touchdowns in the Buckeyes’ 63-10 win over Western Kentucky. That win gives Ohio State some momentum, especially on offense, heading into next week’s game at Notre Dame.

Michael Penix Jr.

Michael Penix Jr made a strong case for being the Heisman Trophy front runner on Saturday. He threw for 473 yards and four touchdowns and he didn’t even play the entire fourth quarter.

Penix and Washington destroyed Michigan State 41-7 on the road. The Huskies look like a really good team as they enter Pac-12 play in Week 4 against Cal. Sleep on Penix at your own peril.

Coaches Under Pressure

Florida’s Billy Napier and West Virginia’s Neal Brown might be under the most pressure in College Football this season. Both got huge wins against their rivals. Napier and the Gators, behind a great performance by Trevor Etienne, beat ranked Tennessee. Brown and the Mountaineers got a 17-6 victory in the Backyard Brawl against Pitt.

Those wins can help both coaches stay off the hot seat as the season progresses. The Napier era at Florida and the Brown era at West Virginia are both still alive.

Losers

Top 4 Teams ATS

The top four teams, as ranked by the AP, heading into Week 3 were Georgia, Michigan, Florida State and Texas in that order. The Bulldogs were trailing at home to South Carolina 14-3 at halftime before shutting out the Gamecocks in the second half. Michigan started slow on offense but pulled away. Florida State was in an unexpected close game at Boston College that ended in a two-point win for the Seminoles. Texas didn’t pull away from Wyoming until the fourth quarter.

While all of the top four teams were victorious, not one of them looked great. The four teams went 0-4 against the spread on Saturday.

Alabama’s Coaching Staff

I’d never thought I’d question Nick Saban, but here we are. Unless something happened internally that didn’t allow Jalen Milroe to play, there is no excuse why Milroe didn’t get subbed in when Tyler Buchner and Ty Simpson weren’t moving the needle offensively.

Milroe has been far and away the best quarterback that Alabama has played this season. If Saban and the Tide want to be competitive against the best of the SEC, then Milroe needs to start. Alabama needs to figure out the quarterback situation quickly because Ole Miss comes to Tuscaloosa next week.

Oklahoma State

Oklahoma State arguably had the most embarrassing loss of Week 3. Veteran head coach Mike Gundy and the Cowboys lost at home to South Alabama 33-7. The Jaguars from the Sun Belt Conference completely dominated.

South Alabama is not a bad team by any stretch and Oklahoma State were only 7-point favorites but losing by 26 points to a group of five team is an awful look heading into Big 12 play.
