Virginia Tech vs. NC State CFB Week 9 Betting Preview, Picks and Odds - October 27, 2022
The Virginia Tech Hokies will be looking to avoid a five-game losing streak when the team faces the NC State Wolfpack at Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh, North Carolina at 7:30PM ET on Thursday, October 27. This is, however, a Wolfpack team that will be hungry for a win itself. NC State has lost two of its last three games and needs to get back on track in order to keep its hopes alive of playing in a good bowl game.
The Wolfpack had lofty expectations heading into the season, so they can't afford to spiral the rest of the way. Will that lead to an inspired effort against a Hokies team that has been downright miserable since the start of the season? Here's three things to know before betting on Virginia Tech vs. NC State, plus some other useful information — like odds and computer picks from our predictive analytics model, DimersBOT.

Virginia Tech vs. NC State Betting Preview - Three Things To Know
1. Moving In Opposite Directions
The last time these two teams met was September 26, 2020, when Virginia Tech earned a 45-24 win as a 6-point favorite. That was also the first time the two programs had played one another since 2015, so there isn't much head-to-head history to go off of here — which is a bit odd considering these are two teams from the ACC conference. Also, these programs are both in very different places than they were two years ago, so you can't take too much from that 2020 matchup. The Hokies are rebuilding right now, while the Wolfpack are peaking.
2. Wolfpack Passing Attack Gets Back On Track?
NC State's passing game hasn't quite taken off the way people thought. Devin Leary threw for 3,433 yards with 35 touchdowns and only five picks last year, but he struggled a bit before having his season ended by an injury this year. Now, it's Jack Chambers that has the starting job, and he didn't show much against a very good Syracuse defense on October 15. But NC State should have more success against a Virginia Tech defense that hasn't been great against the pass. The team gave up 351 passing yards to the Miami Hurricanes, who have struggled offensively all year.
3. Can The Hokies Score Enough?
The Hokies are getting a lot of points in this football game, but they have been one of the worst teams in all of college football offensively. Virginia Tech is scoring only 19.4 points per game, which is the 18th-worst mark in the nation. Going on the road against a top-15 scoring defense doesn't sound like a recipe for those woes.
