Group D Prediction: France

Led by the man that won France’s only two World Cup’s, first as a player in 1998 and most recently as a manager at Russia 2018, Didier Deschamps will be keen on adding a third star for Les Bleus.

The French will be entering football's showpiece event with the player now regarded as the best in the world, in current 2022 Ballon d’Or winner Karim Benzema.

Last time out, France were crowned champions without the 33 year-old talisman in their squad and he could prove to be the main protagonist should France go back-to-back.

Deschamps will have some fresh faces to choose from alongside some experienced players who lifted the cup back in 2018 as they first try to avoid the World Cup winners 'curse’.

The curse - which is more of a coincidence - has seen four out of the last five defending champions, fall in the group stage while attempting to defend their title.

France won in 1998 and failed to advance from the group stage in 2002. Same with 2006 winners Italy in 2010, then 2010 winners Spain in 2014 and, most recently, 2014 champion, Germany in 2018.

This, of course, will be overlooked by France fans when analyzing the group and the strength within this new French squad. Deschamps will likely have ten or so players to choose from out of the group that won it back in Russia 2018.

The quality in this team, combined with a brilliant manager, will mean the defending champions smash the World Cup winners' curse. With that France will head into Qatar 2022 at odds of -240 to progress from the group, and +550 odds of securing the World Cup in successive tournaments. Our predictive analytics model has France finishing runners-up, losing in the Final, despite being a 21% chance of making it there and an 11.6% chance of actually lifting the trophy.

Group D Prediction: Denmark

The Danes find themselves in a similar situation to the one they were in back in 2018 when the tournament was in Russia, again facing France and Australia as their biggest competitors to escape from their World Cup Group.

The Red and White Dynamite, however, will approach Football's showpiece confidently after finishing first in their European qualifying group with an outstanding 9-1 record. The one loss came on the final matchday to Scotland having already secured their spot for Qatar 2022.

Heading into Qatar, Denmark will lean upon on their recent strong showings in major international tournaments where they secured a quarter-final finish in Russia 2018, eventually beaten by tournament runners-up, Croatia.

After their impressive WC display, Denmark continued to evolve and made an inspiring run to the semi-final of Euro 2020 where they were ultimately edged out by a controversial Harry Kane penalty.

Denmark showed their true strength and unity following Christian Eriksen’s collapse and, now with their number 10 back in the squad, there's no telling how far this team can really go. Do not be surprised if this team wins the group and makes a deep run in Qatar.

With the togetherness this squad, the tournament Dark Horse will enter the FIFA World Cup at odds of -250 and a 74.9% chance of advance from Group D.

Group D Prediction: Australia

The Socceroos have been regulars at the World Cup since the turn of the century, advancing to the tournament proper on five consecutive occasions now and set to make their 6th overall showing in Qatar.

Australia, under coach Graham Arnold, choked badly to finish third in their AFC qualifying group and needed wins against the UAE and Peru in sudden death playoff-matches, with the Peru game decided on penalties that sent them through to Qatar.

Throughout their qualifying campaign, Australia coach Arnold was regularly spouting arrogantly about the team's performances - a tactic that came back to bite him as their form slumped dramatically almost immediately thereafter. Despite a strong start, where they grabbed 11 straight wins, they tailed off badly with defeats to both Japan and Saudi Arabia that dashed their hopes of automatic qualification, and forced them down the playoff road.

Arnold, who took over the team immediately after Russia 2018, will have some experienced heads to lean on in the form of goalkeeper and captain, Mat Ryan, Aaron Mooy and Jackson Irvine, while young gun Garang Kuol will provide plenty of excitement off the bench. The 18-year-old was recently signed by English Premier League club Newcastle United.

Australia will enter the FIFA World Cup with +2300 odds and a slim 17.5% chance of just advancing to the knockout stages.

Group D Prediction: Tunisia

The Eagles of Carthage are set to make back-to-back appearances at football’s showpiece event with a similar core of players from last time out. In Russia 2018, Tunisia found themselves sandwiched between two of the tournament’s eventual semi-finalists in England and Belgium.

This time, the African nation will enter the tournament a bit more confident and with some tough experience under their belt. En-route to Qatar 2022, Tunisia finished first in their CAF 2nd Round Group which prompted them to play Mali in a two-legged match to reach the World Cup Finals.

A 1-0 away win and a goalless draw four days later was all that was needed for Tunisia to make consecutive appearances at the FIFA World Cup.

Tunisia will be under the management of Jalel Kadri, who was hired in January of this year to embark on a new era for Qatar in 2022. Formerly assistant, Kadri was handed the top job by the Tunisia Football Federation at the start of the year, replacing Mondher Bebaier who paid the price for a below-expectations performance at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Nonetheless they will rely on their veteran and talisman Wahbi Khazari who has registered a whopping 22 goals in 49 appearances for his country. Khazari will be sure to carry the leadership responsibilities of this young and exciting group, as they head into their Group D matchups full of optimism and with nothing to lose.

With that The Eagles of Carthage will enter the FIFA World Cup at odds of +380 to just advance through Group D, with the likelihood of them doing so sitting at 19.5% following 10,000 simulations of the tournament.
