College Football: Biggest Winners and Losers from Week 9

The final week in October saw six top 10 teams face tests away from home. Most passed but some failed. Numerous teams left positive impressions ahead of the College Football Playoff Committee’s first rankings reveal on Tuesday night while others didn’t. Here are Dimers’ three winners and three losers from Week 9 of College Football.

Before we dive in, you should know that it definitely pays to have more than one funded account with the best US Sportsbooks when betting on sports.

Winners

No Brock Bowers? No Problem

You could argue that Georgia had the most impressive performance on Saturday. Sure, the Bulldogs struggled against South Carolina and Auburn earlier this season, but the offense is catching fire and Carson Beck is hitting his stride at the right time without Brock Bowers.

Beck threw for 315 yards and two touchdowns against Florida. He has thrown for over 300 yards in four out of his last five games. Don’t count out Beck in the Heisman Trophy discussion just yet.

Jedd Fisch's Stock

Arizona might be the best three loss team in the country. The Wildcats have not lost by more than one score and two of their three losses were in overtime. Jedd Fisch’s team also has wins against Washington State and Oregon State on its resume.

Arizona has a manageable remaining schedule. The Wildcats play UCLA and Utah both at home and play Colorado and Arizona State on the road. An eight or nine win Arizona team is very realistic.

Snow Games

College football environments are unique in so many ways. The student section, the band, the cheerleaders all have their role on gameday. The fans had such a big role in Saturday’s Air Force vs. Colorado State game that they cost the Rams a 15-yard penalty.

In Saturday’s snow game, Rams fans were caught throwing snowballs at the Air Force sideline. The refs gave the fans a warning and then assessed a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on the second offense. You don’t see fans costing their team yardage very often.

Losers

North Carolina Can't Overcome Its Kryptonite

Another year, another collapse for the Tar Heels. Last season, North Carolina was in College Football Playoff contention well into November before the Tar Heels lost to Georgia Tech and NC State to round out the regular season. They lost to Clemson in the ACC Championship Game and Oregon in the Holiday Bowl as well.

Georgia Tech cost North Carolina its playoff hopes once again this year by handing the Tar Heels their second loss of the season after they started the season 6-0. The Yellow Jackets have won three straight and five of six against North Carolina.

Utah Finally Falls at Home

Heading into Saturday’s critical tilt against Oregon, Utah won 18 straight home games at Rice-Eccles Stadium. The Utes have one of the best environments in the country but that didn’t phase the Ducks.

Oregon did not allow a touchdown and dominated Utah 35-6. The Utes just aren’t the same team without Cam Rising under center.

Oklahoma

After the victory against Texas, Oklahoma looked like the best team in the Big 12. Oklahoma followed that up with a less than convincing two-point win against UCF. On Saturday, the Sooners fell at Kansas. The “improved” Oklahoma defense allowed 443 total yards to Kansas’ backup quarterback.

While the Jayhawks are a solid squad, it still appears that Brent Venables and the Sooners are a year or two away from really contending for a National Championship. Oklahoma has to refocus as the Sooners take on Oklahoma State, West Virginia, BYU and TCU in their final four games of the regular season.
