What Is the Moneyline?

The moneyline is the easiest bet you will come across on your sports betting journey. It may not be the simplest way to win, but to understand, this is your best bet. Dimers.com takes you though a Moneyline bet below. 

A moneyline bet simply means you are picking the outright winner of a singular game. In most sports betting, this is picking one team to beat another. However with the likes of tennis, golf and UFC, you’re picking one athlete to defeat their opponent. 

Once viewing a matchup you’ll see the moneyline. This is how it will look to you:

Kansas City Chiefs: +125 Moneyline 

Tampa Bay Buccaneers: -150 Moneyline

To place your bet, all you need to do is click on the moneyline you wish to wager and you’re on your way!

What you need to know about the Moneyline

The favorite on any given moneyline will have a “-" next to their name. Conversely, the underdog will have a “+”. 

In this instance, you can see Tom Brady’s Bucs are favored to beat Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs. 

Kansas City Chiefs: +125 Moneyline 

Tampa Bay Buccaneers: -150 Moneyline

If you were to bet $100 on the underdog Chiefs, you would collect $225 total — $125 profit. However you would need to place $150 on the Bucs in order to profit $100.

Further Examples:

• If the Bucs had a -200 moneyline you would need to wager $200 in order to win $100. 
• If a team has a “+” moneyline, the goalposts shift. The + tells us how much you would win betting $100, if you win of course.
• For example, a +150 moneyline would mean — if successful — a profit of $150.
  
• Similarly, if the Chiefs had a +185 moneyline, you would make $185 profit — $285 total — when betting $100.

Why can’t I bet the Moneyline?

Thankfully this won’t happen often. However there are circumstances where the moneyline will be pulled by a sportsbook. Their reason for doing so, is because one team is a heavy favorite. In the case of the NFL, it may be when a team is favored by two touchdowns. 

The spread should be your next best option if this does indeed happen. However, make sure you shop around to check if any book is offering the moneyline.
