We take a look at the near misses, major chokes, backdoor covers - even some untimely injuries - that cost our fellow sports bettors big pay days. The Chiefs somehow lose to the Colts

The Chiefs would have likely secured a win in Week 3 and remain undefeated if it weren’t for the penalty called after Chris Jones apparently said something shocking enough to Matt Ryan for referee Shawn Smith to throw the flag.

Without that penalty, the Colts would've been forced to punt on fourth down. Instead, their downs got reset after the penalty which Indianapolis used to engineer another drive that ended with Jelani Woods catching a 12-yard touchdown from Ryan to put the Colts in front for good.

Bad luck for this bettor, who is no doubt still cursing Jones to this day.

Utah State's late capitulation

The 31,402 in attendance arrived early and stayed late as the game was not decided until the final two minutes of play.

The Broncos were leading 28-23 when redshirt sophomore linebacker Gabe Hunter intercepted Utah State's Cooper Legas at the 10-yard line to put the ball in Boise State's hands with 1:28 remaining.

Two plays later, Green raced down the left sideline for the longest run from scrimmage in program history to put the game out of reach and break Utah State hearts.

The final points came courtesy of a 48-yard pick six from sophomore safety Sevi Oladipo with 31 seconds left and Boise State defeated Utah State for the seventh-straight season.

Utah St (+16.5) at Boise St, where USU is down 5 with 1:10 left and Boise St QB runs for a 91 yd TD when they could've run out the clock, and then a pick 6 on the next drive.

Caleb Williams' Over hits, then doesn't

When the sophomore sensation stepped on the field for the Pac-12 championship game inside Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, this bettor was probably counting his cash when his Williams' rushing yards Over ticket was all but cashed in the 1st Quarter.

Williams was electric on the Trojans' first couple of drives, extending a drive for USC on a fourth-down conversion as well as a miraculous 59-yard run that set up his second first-quarter touchdown.

But, a number of subsequent sacks resulted in a seriously bad beat for some Overs bettors, as outlined by PittiePicks below.

Not a Bad Beat per se.. cause it caused me to win. But had under the rushing yards for USC QB at the PAC 12 Championship. He went over in the 1st quarter.. WAY OVER. Then was sacked REPEATEDLY and it went under. 😅🤑

Pistons choke .... hard

Entering the game, NBA teams were 2-12,873 in the play-by-play era (since 1996-97) when trailing by 14 or more points with 3 minutes remaining; the Clippers were 0-417. The only wins were by the Hawks on March 17, 1997, against the Magic and by the Kings on Jan. 27, 2020, against the Timberwolves. Since that Sacramento victory, teams in that scenario had lost 1,467 games.

But the Clippers overcame the odds, then outscored Detroit 14-3 in the extra period, to destroy Matt Meiselman's dreams of a nice payout.

Been betting almost every day of the year and the worst beat was probably less than 24 hours ago...

Pistons were +8 yesterday and led 126-112 with 3:34 left. Clippers pulled all their starters but still came back to force OT and won by 11.

This bettor was right, but still didn't win ... ouch

Soccer betting can be cruel, so cruel.

After Argentina lost to Saudi Arabia in their first game of the 2022 World Cup, this bettor took the inflated odds and bet them to not only qualify for the Final, but also to win the tournament and for Lionel Messi to be awarded the Golden Boot for the most goals.

All three of those things happened. The only problem was, despite leading 2-0 with 18 minutes to play, France decided to score two goals in as many minutes and force the game to extra time (and then penalty kicks) to simultaneously kill this guy's dreams of a big payday.

Argentina would of course go on to win on PKs, and Messi did win the Golden Boot - but the ML bet on them winning needed to cash within 90 minute, not after extra time or PKs. Ouch.

Rolled ARG win WC into WC final ARG ML+Messi GB in Nov after they lost to Saudi. Was going well until 82nd minute.
