SEC Conference Preview

The Basics

# of Teams in Bowl Games: 11

College Football Playoff Participants: Georgia

Bowl Wins: Arkansas (Liberty Bowl), Tennessee (Orange Bowl), Alabama (Sugar Bowl), LSU (Citrus Bowl), Mississippi State (ReliaQuest Bowl), Georgia (National Champions)

The SEC is always the heartbeat of college football, and that was no different last season. Georgia established themselves as more than a flash in the pan and cemented their legacy during the Stetson Bennett era as college football's latest dynasty with back to back national championships. Meanwhile, Alabama's Nick Saban sat on the media panel at the College Football Playoff, surely envying Kirby Smart's Bulldogs.

Georgia will have a new quarterback, and a new look, this season. They aren't the only team that loses stars though, Tennessee's Hendon Hooker and Jalin Hyatt are gone, as is Bama's Bryce Young and Jahmir Gibbs. It will be a new era in the SEC...and that can be hard for bettors to judge what to do with. So where's the value? Let's dive in.

Contenders: Alabama, Georgia, LSU

The SEC will always run through it's premier programs, and the three names listed above are certainly that. All three have won national championships in the last decade, and will have opportunities to capitalize again this season. Brian Kelly has LSU rolling, making this a three horse race of teams that have significant chances of winning the league according to DimersBOT.

It still runs through Georgia, who has a 51.8% probability to repeat as SEC champions according to DimersBOT. There's a monstrous quarterback battle taking place between Carson Beck and Brock Vandagriff to replace Stetson Bennett, but the talent around the QB will make things easier. Tight end Brock Bowers is back, and may just be the most talented player in all of college football. It's a rebuilding year for the Georgia defense, which opens the door for their conference rivals.

And that starts with Alabama, who hasn't quite looked like the Alabama we have come to know and love in the last few seasons. That's less about Bama's talent level though, and more that Georgia has risen to the top to match them. With plenty of questions to this year's version of Georgia, the door is back open for Alabama to re-establish themselves atop the SEC. Dual threat quarterback Jalen Milroe may take the reigns, as could five-star Ty Simpson or Notre Dame transfer Tyler Buchner.

Also involved here is LSU, who is the one contender in this conference that returns a bonafide star at quarterback with Jayden Daniels. They return eight total starters from a high quality offensive attack last season. LSU's schedule is a brute, and the Tigers will need to at minimum split with Alabama and Florida State, and run the table the rest of the season to make the Playoff. Easier said than done.

DimersBOT marks Georgia as the favorite, but gives Alabama a 25.8% probability to win the SEC and LSU a 15.4% chance respectively. Unlike other conferences, the top of the SEC is too loaded to provide a sleeper pick. We can't see many teams with a true chance to compete here, as evidenced by a massive drop off all the way down to Texas A'M's 5% probability as the 4th most likely champion.

Best Bets To Make:

1. Alabama to win the SEC West (-105)
2. Georgia to win the playoff (+215)
3. Alabama to make the playoff (+135)

We're backing Alabama as by far the best bet on the board here, in fact the Tide to win the SEC West is our model's highest edge of the entire college football season. We advise hedging a bit by backing Georgia as well, and the smartest play there is the Dawgs to win the playoff at +215 odds, which gives bettors a higher edge than Georgia to win the conference. Alabama to make the playoff is good value, and there's certainly a world where one of these teams could win the SEC but both teams could make the playoff.
