There’s no substitute for postseason experience but San Francisco is taking the keys out of veteran quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo’s hands and passing them to Trey Lance, the No. 3 overall selection in the 2021 draft. Lance appeared in six games, starting two, as a rookie and threw for five touchdowns and rushed for one along with 168 yards with two interceptions. The team also restructured Garoppolo's deal to make him a highly paid backup. 

Lance is a legitimate dual threat and is backed by a defense that ranked third in the league and added a nice piece to the secondary in Charvarius Ward. However, Lance & Co. better hope the offseason drama surrounding emerging do-it-all star Deebo Samuel (1,405 receiving yards, 365 rushing yards, 14 touchdowns) is over. He signed a big contract extension, but is it truly water under the bridge?

San Francisco 49ers X-Factor - Brandon Aiyuk, WR

Brandon Aiyuk was a ghost early last season — nine catches through six games — but became more reliable the rest of the way and basically matched his rookie numbers with 56 receptions, 826 yards and five scores. He’ll need to raise his game even more and be there for Lance when Samuel and George Kittle get doubled.

San Francisco 49ers Super Bowl 57 Chances

It depends on your confidence level in San Francisco’s young quarterback and if Samuel will be a happy camper before deciding how much, if at all, to play the Niners to win it all. The value is decent and the NFC isn’t stacked.
