What are Novelty Props?
Novelty props are unique and often amusing wagers that go beyond traditional betting on the outcome of a game. These bets are particularly popular during major sporting events like the Super Bowl, adding an extra layer of entertainment for both avid sports bettors and casual fans. Novelty props cover a wide range of unconventional topics, and they are not directly related to the game's final score, player performance or any outcome of the game itself.

They can add a fun and unpredictable element to Super Bowl 58 betting, appealing to a broader audience by incorporating pop culture, entertainment, and various aspects of the event outside of the actual game.
Some of the most popular novelty props include:
- Gatorade Color: Betting on the color of the Gatorade that will be poured on the winning coach during the post-game celebration. Read our full breakdown of this market here
- Coin Toss Outcome: Wagering on whether the coin toss will result in heads or tails.
- Halftime Show Surprises: Predicting specific elements of the halftime show, such as the songs performed, special guests, or wardrobe malfunctions.
- National Anthem Length: Betting on the duration of the national anthem performance.
- Celebrity Sightings: Guessing which celebrities might be shown on screen or make appearances during the broadcast.
The winning team’s Gatorade bath color and National Anthem length are arguably the most popular in these markets, though the nature of the halftime show and storylines leading up to the game can often influence which unique markets become available.
Super Bowl 2024 Novelty Props Explained
For those unfamiliar with these markets, here are the basics to know for some of the more popular props:
Gatorade Color
Hands down the most popular and fun novelty prop that persists every year is betting on the color of the winning team’s Gatorade bath. Synonymous with big victories, the Gatorade bath is an all-but-certain occurrence after the final tick of the clock. Players on the winning team douse the head coach with the contents of the Gatorade cooler, with bettors placing wagers on the color of the game fuel.
There’s no real science to it, as only three times in the past seven years has the color been representative of the winning team, however, it truly adds an extra layer of anticipation throughout the game. Dimers has a more detailed guide to betting on the Gatorade color market here.
National Anthem Length
As self-explanatory as it sounds, betting on the length of the National Anthem is just that. The books will set a line for the length of the anthem, and bettors will have the option to wager on either the over or under. This year, music and tv icon Reba McEntire gets the nod. Fans of this prop can do a little bit of research into the average length and the singer’s tendencies but again, this is not a prop based in data so much as entertainment.

Coin Toss
No one said the popular bets were all fun. The coin toss marks the real start of the game, but it’s not a very exciting moment in and of itself (unless you’re Jerome Bettis). It’s simple: you either bet Heads, or Tails. It’s a true 50/50 bet with no other option, however there’s a catch. Like most 50/50 results in sportsbetting, the books probably won’t price the odds at a 50% probability (+100 each way). Instead, each side will likely be something like -110 or -115, which is approximately 53%. This means the books are effectively taxing you on either side of a 50/50 call, making no side of this bet fair value. Furthermore, it’s purely chance and not a market smart bettors should be looking to invest in.
Where Can You Bet on Novelty Props?
Most major sportsbooks like DraftKings, FanDuel and BetMGM will offer these markets and more, between now and the start of the Big Game. It’s important to keep an eye out on multiple books, to ensure you always get the bet odds, and that you’re taking advantage of the lucrative sign-up offers that are available in the days leading up to game day on February 11.
