North Carolina Sports Betting Guide: FAQ, Launch Details

It’s an exciting time to be a sports bettor, particularly if you live in North Carolina as the Tar Heel state is prepared to become the latest to join the ranks with legalized mobile sports betting on March 11, 2024.

Eager residents are greatly anticipating the launch but may not be aware of all the critical details as the state prepares for launch, so we’ve compiled a comprehensive list of the key information you need to know so you can hit the ground running on launch day.

Is Sports Betting Legal in North Carolina?

You can currently bet on sports at the three in-state casinos, but sports betting is not yet live for online wagering in the state until launch day that was pre-determined by the North Carolina Lottery Commission. Launch day is coming soon, however, after Governor Roy Cooper signed HB347 into law.

When Will Sports Betting Launch in North Carolina?

The big day is coming soon. As Dimers previously reported after months of waiting, North Carolina residents will be able to place their first wagers when the state goes live with mobile betting on March 11, 2024, just in time for March Madness. This is a key launch date for getting residents interested in backing local teams like UNC and Duke.

Which Sportsbooks will Launch in North Carolina?

We don’t yet know the comprehensive list of sportsbooks that will be available on launch day, but we can look at previous state launches to get an idea. Every online betting operator must partner with a local sports entity – a professional team, sports arena, PGA course or NASCAR track – in order to be granted license to operate in North Carolina.

Once these sportsbooks are confirmed, Dimers will be your go-to resource for finding the best sign-up offers and detailed sportsbook reviews via our dedicated NC Best Sportsbooks section.

Who Can Bet on Sports in North Carolina?

Any residents who are 21+ years of age and physically present in North Carolina will be able to register at the available sportsbooks and place wagers when physically located within the state.

When Can I Register for Sports Betting in North Carolina?

If you can think of it, you can probably bet on it, as the North Carolina Lottery Commission released an expansive list of sports and leagues that will be available to wager on.

These include the most popular – basketball, baseball, football, hockey, golf, tennis and soccer – to the more niche and obscure, like bowling, cricket, cycling, Esports, the Olympics and much, much more.

Can You Bet on North Carolina-based College Teams?

Yes! Unlike several states that restrict residents from betting on the in-state college teams, North Carolina residents will be able to proudly wager on the University of North Carolina, Duke and others as soon as betting goes live on March 11.

Can You Bet on Horse Racing in North Carolina?

Horse racing will become legal to bet on in North Carolina, however it will not be offered on launch day, March 11, as the North Carolina Lottery Commission continues to form their guidelines.
