Panthers vs. Hurricanes Best Bets

Thursday, May 18, 2023 - 8:00PM EST

PICKS: Hurricanes -1 (+118), Brent Burns Over 3.5 Shots on Goal (+100)

The Eastern Conference Finals kick off on Thursday night as the Carolina Hurricanes host the Florida Panthers. The Panthers, who were the lowest seed in the East, have taken the unlikely route of defeating the Boston Bruins (7 games) and the Toronto Maple Leafs (5 games) to get to this point. The Hurricanes disposed of the New York Islanders (6 games) and the New Jersey Devils (5 games) to get back to the Conference Final for the first time since 2019. These teams met 3 times during the Regular Season, with the Canes holding a 2-1 record and out-scoring  the Panthers 10-7. This should be a tight series and while I think the Panthers are live, I am looking to back the Canes in Game 1. Carolina has been just about dominant at home during the playoffs where they are 5-1 and have out-scored their opponents 22-11. Goaltender Freddy Andersen returned for Game 6 of the Islander Series and has been just about unbeatable since. Andersen is sporting a 5-0 record with a 1.80 goals against average and a .931 save percentage during the playoffs thus far. The Canes also hold the league's top playoff Penalty Kill at 90% which will combat Florida's 6th best Power Play, which sits at 27%. The Panthers have been a good road team during the playoffs as they have a very impressive 6-1 record but I think the Canes will be too much for them to handle in Game 1 and I'll back them on the -1 line, at plus money, instead of laying -140 on the money line.
 
I am also going to look at Carolina Defenseman Brent Burns to eclipse his shot on goal prop. Burns just loves to fire the puck as he leads all playoff participants with 95 shot attempts and is 11th with 41 shots on goal, which equates to 8.6 attempts per game and 3.7 shots on goal per game. It is also important to note that the Panthers are allowing 35.3 shots per game during the playoffs, which is 2nd most. I like Burns to make his presence known in Game 1 and I'll take the over on his SOG prop, at even money.
