Day 6 - A Perfect Season?

Today is not about a look at how you can profit with our model's data, but how you can avoid falling into an odds trap on the books.

In the history of the NFL, only 4 teams have ever gone undefeated in the regular season. The Bears did so in 1934 and 1942 and since the merger, just the Miami Dolphins and New England Patriots have achieved the feat.

Now, there's an extra game in the mix which compounds the already nearly impossible task.

You can see that our model gives 7 teams greater than a 0% probability of completing a 17-0 campaign in 2024-25, and even then, they're all under 1%, most of them under 0.1%.

Despite those incredibly slim chances, the books are offering silly prices for a team to do so. Our "favored" team to pull it off is the San Francisco 49ers at 0.14%, yet their odds imply a full 1% chance.

Sounds kinds close right? Well, that 0.14% chance means they should be no shorter than +71300, showing you that it's not close at all.

Even worse, the books have the Eagles even shorter at +8500, yet we give them just a 0.02% chance! That should be almost +500000!

This market might be fun to imagine the ride of tailing a team that might go 17-0 but realistically, it's a bad bet all around and it's important to understand the true value of markets like this as you look to become a better bettor.
