Jaguars vs. Jets: NFL Predictions for Thursday Night Football on December 22, 2022

Mike White is out for the New York Jets again in Week 16, so New York will be turning to Zach Wilson for a Thursday Night Football showdown with a surging Jacksonville Jaguars squad. This is a game that both teams really need if they want to make the playoffs. The Jaguars currently have a real shot at winning the AFC South, while the Jets are still in the mix in the AFC wild-card picture. But neither one of these teams can afford to let this one get away, so there should be drama here. Find out how we think this one will play out in our Jaguars vs. Jets betting preview.

Jaguars vs. Jets Odds and Betting Lines

Will The Jaguars Cover The Spread?

We did a whole story on how we like the Jaguars the rest of the season, so we clearly think there's a good shot they beat the Jets. And our DimersBOT is in full agreement, marking it a very high probability that Jacksonville ends up winning this one.

The reality when looking at this matchup is that the Jacksonville offense might be a little too explosive for New York right now. With Wilson at quarterback, you can probably count on a few mistakes out of the Jets. That won't fly against a Jaguars team that is cruising offensively behind the superb play of Trevor Lawrence. Even with New York having a great defense, it's hard to win games when you don't have a trustworthy option at the game's most important position.

Will The Jets Cover The Spread?

For as bad as Wilson looked on some of his throws last week, he also connected on a few deep passes. Confidence is the key for Wilson right now, as he does have arm talent and there's a significant amount of skill around him. If Wilson can just avoid making big mistakes, the Jets will have a good chance of pulling this one out at home. But that's a pretty big ask for a mistake-prone quarterback.

The one thing New York can count on is probably its defense. The Jets have the fourth-best scoring defense in the league, and rookie corner Sauce Gardner has the ability of locking up either Christian Kirk or Zay Jones. That's a start when it comes to slowing down the Jaguars offense.

Why The Over Will Hit

The total in this game is lower than the average amount of points Jacksonville has scored over the last two weeks. The Jaguars are averaging 38.0 points per game in that span, and they will feel pretty confident about scoring another 24 or so in this matchup. That would mean that the Jets would just need to score two touchdowns in order for this Over to hit. That's a pretty reasonable outcome here.

Jacksonville is really good on offense this season, but the team's defense is nothing to write home about. If the Jets can't score against them, there's no hope of them winning games until White is cleared.

Why The Under Will Hit

The Jets are going to do everything they can to slow down the Jaguars passing game, and they'll also be running the football a lot when they're on offense. That could result in this game being a little lower scoring than we've become used to with Jacksonville recently.

The Jaguars are also heading into a game in which the weather could throw them off a bit. Jacksonville hasn't played on the road in the cold in quite some time. It's not an easy thing to overcome. On top of that, the Under is 8-1 when the Jaguars are coming off a game against an NFC opponent since the start of last season.

Jaguars vs. Jets Prediction

Lean: Jaguars +1

It's hard not to take the Jaguars here. They're a better football team and we just don't have much faith in Wilson getting the job done. This might have been a much different pick if White was healthy.
