Second Event - 3-Point Contest, 8:00PM ET
The first event of the weekend that we can actually use some numbers to determine a pick, this year's 3-point contest is set to show off what is fast-becoming the most important skill in the NBA.
First off, let's look at the odds for the guys via FanDuel Sportsbook.
- +440: Patty Mills, Fred VanVleet
- +490: Trae Young
- +550: Desmond Bane
- +600: Zach LaVine, Luke Kennard
- +950: CJ McCollum
- +1200: Karl-Anthony Towns
Okay, now for our plays.
With this being an eight-man field and the favorites being as long as +440, the smart play here is to take two guys.
Firstly, let's look at Desmond Bane. A contender for the Most Improved Player award, Bane has taken his game to a whole new level this season, with his long range shotmaking certainly the highlight.
Although many people think it's hard to use form when making a pick for this contest, the stat that stands out for the Grizzlies guard is his 3PT% in road games this season.
Bane leads the league (with 50+ makes), hitting a ridiculous 49.2% from three when playing away from his home court. The next best in this contest for this stat is Patty Mills at 46.0%, and he's the favorite!
The other important factor for this contest is that Bane has a very repeatable, consistent stroke, which is something that Trae Young (+500) for example doesn't have.
Oh yeah, he also hit 7 threes in his last game.
The other guy we're betting on is recent Pelicans recruit, CJ McCollum.
CJ has had three seasons shooting above 40% from three, but it's not only his shooting that makes him a value play here.
Why we're so big on McCollum at these odds is that he's an Ohio local! CJ grew up just 60 miles south of Cleveland, in a town called Canton.
The shooting guard has never hidden his love for Cleveland, with Sundays not feeling complete without him tweeting about his beloved Browns.
Look for CJ to feel right at home in this contest, and this city. +950 is simply too good to pass up!
P.S. Just like Bane, CJ hit 7 threes in his last game.
BETS: Desmond Bane (+550), CJ McCollum (+950)
