Which MLB team is hot right now?

Break up the Arizona Diamondbacks! Jake McCarthy, touted in this column yesterday, homered and drove in five runs last night as Arizona upped its win streak to five in a row with a 12-3 waxing of the Phillies and Aaron Nola.

The D-Backs have produced double digits in runs three times during the surge and tied slumping San Francisco for third place in the NL West. They’ll try to complete a sweep of Philadelphia tonight with young Tommy Henry on the hill.

Which MLB team is cold right now?

Do you remember the San Francisco Giants of 2021? They were nothing short of dominant on the way to the NL West title with a record of 107-55. This year they lost their 55th game on Aug. 5.

With the final day of August upon us, San Francisco is mired in a six-game losing streak after sitting at .500 (61-61) a week ago. A team batting average of .233 has been the biggest culprit of its demise.

The Giants send Alex Wood to the mound against San Diego this afternoon and will take cuts against Joe Musgrove. Not the best matchup on paper for a team playing with no confidence.

MLB players: Who is in hot form?

There’s been far more ups than downs for the Texas Rangers in 2022. They cleaned house recently and will look for a fresh start next spring.

One of their biggest bright spots is 1B Nate Lowe, who was acquired from Tampa Bay prior to last season. Lowe is raking big-time as of late (21-for-55, 6 homers and 16 RBIs since mid-August) and is batting .298 on the year with 22 dingers and 65 RBIs.

He’ll face Houston’s Luis Garcia this afternoon and will try to break an 0-for-6 mark against the Astros righthander who hasn’t exactly been a model of consistency. 

MLB Players: Who is out of form?

The Baltimore Orioles have been one of the top feel-good stories in baseball this season. Usually as the calendar flips to September, these birds are just looking to avoid triple digits in the loss column.

Now they’re playing meaningful games as wild-card contenders. 1B Ryan Mountcastle recharging his batteries for the stretch run is crucial to the Orioles’ playoff chances. He was dropped to seventh in the batting order yesterday amid a 4-for-23 drought and proceeded to go 0-for-1 with a sac fly.

He’ll face a hot Triston McKenzie in Cleveland tonight so probably best to stay away.
