NBA Defensive Player of the Year Picks
DPOY favorite - Rudy Gobert
The Frenchman, and 3-time winner, has emerged as the runaway favorite for DPOY after Draymond Green went down with injury in December. Statistically speaking, Gobert is having one of his finest years with career high averages in field goal percentage, as well as the key defensive metrics in rebounds and blocks.
Overall, though, Utah are not the overall defensive force they have been in previous years, ranking third-worst in the league for opponent points per game. That's a stat that could hurt Rudy's chances to maintain his stranglehold on the award, particularly if he continues to miss games. Out of the Jazz's 58 games thus far, Gobert has missed 14. A similar return in the second half of the season could see a shift in the odds. That's a big if, though.
Our suggestion: Make the bet
DPOY threat - Draymond Green
Draymond was looking good to claim his second defensive award before a calf injury curtailed his run. The Warriors have been a somewhat surprising revelation this season and Green's defensive output has a lot to do with it, leading the team to the fourth-best ranking for opponent points per game. And while a return to the squad will surely shorten his odds, there is simply far too much of the unknown about his injury right now to confidently bet on him. This one is a definite wait and see.
Our suggestion: Stay away
