Juan Soto Injury Saves FanDuel Sportsbook Millions of Dollars on Home Run Parlay

Not all bad beats are created equal, and in this case, one person’s (or several dozen of them) bad beat is a sportsbooks saving grace.

We know a bunch of you were waiting on a Ryan Mountcastle dinger yesterday that came up just short. Or just look at this little HR parlay I played on Wednesday, that ended up smacking on Thursday instead.

In my defense, I couldn’t run it back with the bonus bet as O’Hearn only came in to pinch hit…

Just look at last night’s game between the New York Yankees and Minnesota Twins where Twitter/X user @Romano_718 had just one leg left in a +1545946 home run parlay, needing only a Juan Soto dinger to cash in and win a payout of $30,920.92 on a $2 bet.

That’s where it all comes off the rails.

The +1545946 Home run Parlay that nearly hit

First, let’s look at this monster ticket. It featured the likes of Jose Ramirez, Teoscar Hernandez, Seiya Suzuki, Adley Rutschman and Marcell Ozuna, all of whom succeeded in their dinger quest.

It’s impressive just to get to this point, and a friendly reminder why we always round robin our home run parlays. Even if you sprinkle on the 2s and 3s, you’ll save yourself some pain if you only get a couple of ‘em.

Jump over to the Twins-Yankees game where we’ve finished the fifth inning. Juan Soto has been up to the plate three times, picking up a pair of walks and one fly out. Then the rain came.

Just before the sixth inning, the game went into a rain delay which presented a problem of its own. Having completed five innings and with the Yanks up 8-5, it was well within the realm of possibility that this game would be called prematurely, ending any chance of another Soto at-bat.

On top of that, Juan Soto was the next batter up, set to lead off the sixth inning for the Yanks.

Good News ... But Bad News

After roughly a 56-minute weather delay, the game was announced to resume, just after 10:00PM ET.

Good news, right? Wrong.

Bettors looking at the game feed noticed the worst possible scenario – Juan Soto had been replaced in the lineup by Alex Verdugo. No word as to why (at first), just Alex Verdugo’s name coming up to bat where Juan Soto’s needed to be to cash this miracle ticket.

Not long after, the Yankees announced on social media that Soto left the game due to “left forearm discomfort,” a string of words that strikes fear into baseball fans as it often preceded a player getting Tommy John Surgery.

The Aftermath

Sure, many countless tickets have lost on that final leg of a parlay, sometimes by a single point or being on the wrong end of a missed strike call, but this one has got to sting.

What doesn’t sting, is the pockets over at FanDuel, as you could see at least 64 followers tailed this parlay. If they all did it at just $2 like Romano, that would be a minimum total payout of $1,978,938.88 million.

Almost two million dollars. Bailed out by a sore left forearm.
