Chelsea vs. Tottenham - Pick of the Day
Sunday, August 14, 2022 - 11:30AM ET
Well, it’s all fun and games until Tottenham battle Chelsea. I’m as much a fan as I am a handicapper and I never hide that fact, so to anyone who isn’t aware (which is shocking, get your head out of the sand) I’m a die-hard Spurs supporter. I say that before all my bets on their games so that everyone knows where my biases lie and so nobody is confused or surprised, but I also think my vast knowledge of Tottenham and how they play (as well as my realistic understanding of their shortcomings) provide a bit of added benefit.
Speaking of, I am keenly aware of how miserable it is for Spurs to face Chelsea. Arsenal will always be our biggest rival, but I absolutely hate Chelsea with all my heart and I hope Stamford Bridge gets swallowed by a massive mutant snake and thrown up into the ocean (because even a snake cant stomach something that disgusting). Why, you ask? Well, aside from their miserable players and overall loathsomeness (pretty sure I made up that word, but I’m sticking with it), Chelsea just seem to have our number. In the last 12 matches Spurs and Chelsea have played, we’ve won one to their nine, which isn’t exactly a great ratio.
Looking forward to this iteration, it’s hard to say exactly what we learned about either of these sides last week. Chelsea didn't look particularly good, but lucky for them Everton were so incompetent that it didn't matter. As for Spurs, a 4-1 win was great but Son and Kane looked rusty and they couldn't help but concede first just to make things difficult. So, rather than try to guess the outcome, I’ll go with both teams to score at -146.
Spurs are too good offensively to be slowed down by almost anyone, and the fact that they managed four without either striker finding the net in Week 1 proves that. Chelsea are solid in back, but not quite as ruthless as they were a year ago. On the other side, Spurs are still a leaky faucet and can't help but give up a goal or two with knuckleheads like Eric Dier centering the defense.
I certainly hope Spurs come out and win 9-0, but I hardly expect it and I think both teams find at least one fairly comfortably, which makes -146 a number worth buying in at. Pray for me and my mental health if Spurs lose (and, even worse, Spurs lose AND the bet loses).
PICK: Both Teams To Score (-146, 1.5 units)
