Leeds vs. Chelsea - Pick of the Day 

Sunday, August 21, 2022 - 9:00AM ET

Strap in Gold Diggers, this is gonna be a long one. Because, after last week’s Derby between Tottenham and Chelsea, there’s a hell of a lot to say about Chelsea and it actually has some impact on the bet.

To begin, Chelsea can rot in hell and I have no qualms with anything that happened or “unfairly” taking a point from that game, though I will say Thomas Tuchel should probably be locked up in jail for assaulting Antonio Conte. But, while my personal animus may bias me a bit, it’s not unfair to say that Chelsea got absolutely fucking robbed by the refs. Between the foul that never happened before the first goal and Cristian Romero trying to build a homemade voodoo doll out of Marc Cucurella’s hair before Harry Kane’s equalizer, I would begrudgingly admit that Chelsea should feel hard done by. And, in all honesty, they were also just the better team.

What does that have to do with this week? Well, for one, if you’re a narrative bettor then this is a great opportunity to look at Chelsea’s well-earned frustration and expect them to come out guns blazing. I generally stick away from that type of approach when I wager, but even I expect this team to be pretty damn pissed off.

On top of that, they have the perfect crash test dummy in Leeds for their cause. Despite an impressive four points through two matches, Leeds have managed to give up three goals to Southampton and Wolves, which doesn’t exactly scream “we know how to play defense good.” Facing a Chelsea side who would be better than those two clubs if they play half as well as they did on Sunday, Leeds could be in for a tough day.

So, what’s our angle? Team total, of course! Once again we’re going to split the metaphorical baby here (that analogy is actually irrelevant, but it used the word “split” so it was close enough) and take the team total Over 1.5 and 2.5, which balances some safety (-170) with risk (+200). Chelsea have more than enough quality to get to three here, and the biggest danger is honestly whether they need to. We can hope for a Leeds goal as well to push Chelsea, but it isn’t really a necessity in my opinion.

It’s one of my least favorite things to do (and the second straight week I’ve done it in some form), but the right play here is to bet on Chelsea finding the net.
