The more things change, the more they stay the same. Despite an entirely new cast of faces to go along with a shiny new season, much of what we saw last weekend was a carbon copy of last year’s results. City, Arsenal and Newcastle are very good, Chelsea and Liverpool are somewhere between great and a total mess, Spurs are a massive yet somehow glorious dumpster fire, and United are just gifted wins by the Premier League (if you think United wouldn't have gotten that penalty if the roles were reversed you're out of your fucking mind).

On top of that, we got many of the same frustrations and joys in our gambling. The Hammers fucked everything up (per usual) by hitting the post twice in route to a one-goal performance, while we managed to cash our Spurs over easily because scoring and conceding is what they do best (speaking of, the range of emotions I felt in the first half was enough to last most fans a season. God help me).

So, we end the weekend slightly up but with some room for improvement. Now time to make good on those lofty expectations - let’s gamble.

Premier League Best Bets - Week 2

Wolves vs. Brighton - Saturday, August 19 at 10:00AM ET

One of the most important things to avoid after Week 1 is to overvalue a single performance. As I mentioned above, we did see a lot of consistency carry over from last season to start the campaign, but things will go awry quickly and its best to tread lightly on making big assumptions until you get about eight or nine matches in.

Fortunately, this game provides us with two teams who pretty heavily “over-performed” in Week 1 (you can decide if beating up on Luton or barely losing to United is impressive, but the results were better than the books predicted), so we don't have to worry about any prices being too skewed. And, while I’m still not certain how Brighton continue to succeed while selling off all of their players for absurd prices, I absolutely do not believe the Wolves team is any good. Sure, they hung with United for most of the game and probably deserved more, but I was never impressed with Wolves as much as I was shocked by how bad United looked.

Brighton have proven a commitment to aggressive play, particularly against beatable teams, and Wolves are entirely beatable. Brighton put up nine goals against them in their two matches last season, and TT Over 1.5 at -106 seems well worth the money.

PICK: Brighton Team Total Over 1.5 Goals (-106, 1.25 units

West Ham vs. Chelsea - Sunday, August 20 at 11:30AM ET

As a Spurs fan my hatred of Arsenal is a given, but it almost feels so predetermined that its slightly boring. West Ham and Chelsea, on the other hand, have truly earned my deep loathing and disgust, and I’d probably love to see them burn in the pits of hell just as much as the Gunners. But, while that isn't an offering that the books have on the table right now, I can bet on both of them to fail with a “both teams to concede” bet (also known as BTTS, but I prefer the negative side on this one).

Let's start with West Ham, who showed last weekend that, despite their incredible ability to miss significant chances, that they are both aggressive and have the talent to find goals even with some new pieces in the lineup. Chelsea aren't the easiest cookie to crack (pretty sure I'm mixing up some phrases here but whatever), but Liverpool found some solid chances to break them and it was only by the grace of one shot on target out of 13 that the Blues conceded a single goal.

As for Chelsea finding the net, well, they just have too much talent for West Ham to contain (unlimited money from selling all your spare parts to Saudi Arabia will do that for you). They’ll stay aggressive and try to overwhelm the Hammers, even on the road, but I think they also concede in the process. -126 is a strong price on this one with two teams who are both talented in front of net.

PICK: Both Teams To Score (-126, 1.26 units
