Thank the fucking lord. WE. ARE. BACK. Sports and gambling and gambling and sports as far as these cartoon eyes can see, and damn does it look good.
One of the reasons sports and gambling make such a good pair is that they both invoke a lot of intense emotions. The highs and lows of being a fan are, in many ways, like the joy and pain you feel from winning or losing bets.
Sure, you might think that compounding those feelings by doing both at the same time is a dangerous game, but to that I say: “you’re not my mother don't tell me how to live my life.” A little meth and acid at the same time never hurt anyone…
The start of a season brings an added level of excitement - the prospect (see what I did there) of all the enjoyment and wins we could have over the next 10 months makes me want to run through a fucking wall. With Football starting soon too, you could probably say we are on the precipice of the best time for sports every year.
And, rather than caveat that nice sentiment with some words of caution like I might normally, I’ll simply say “embrace it.” There is absolutely nothing fucking better than the return of soccer (technically it started a few weeks ago but whatever), and I could not be more ready to dive head first into another season with all of you.
Sure, the potential misery of watching Spurs implode for 10 months has me worried, but for now I’m just going to pretend like everything will be fine. It’s not like our owner got arrested for insider trading or something crazy like that…
Now let's do what we do best - gamble!

Premier League Best Bets - Week 1
Bournemouth vs. West Ham - Saturday, August 12 at 10:00AM ET
Ah, yes, the game everyone wants to bet on - Bournemouth and West Ham. No? just me? Well, that’s too bad because I make the decisions here and we are going to start the season off with a pick for one of the least relevant games you could imagine. You’re welcome.
While, as a general matter, I don’t like supporting West Ham in any way, it’s hard not to find some value on them scoring goals here. They had a very ugly 2022/23 campaign (despite the ECL “trophy”) and just sold one of their better strikers, but Bournemouth were a defensive disaster in the EPL last season sporting the 3rd most goals conceded and second worst goal differential in the EPL. Quite honestly, its a minor miracle they didn't get relegated.
So, while West Ham are going to have to figure out how to deal with the losses of Declan Rice and Scamacca, they should still have enough talent to cause problems for a disastrous Cherries defense. At +136, I’ll bite on the high payout.
PICK: West Ham Team Total Over 1.5 Goals (+136, 1 unit)
Brentford vs. Tottenham - Sunday, August 13 at 9:00AM ET
Betting on my beloved Spurs against Brentford in week 1 is probably an awful idea in almost every way imaginable. Not only am I torn somewhere between believing they can bring me happiness and that they’ll crush my soul again this season, but they also (as of the time I write this) still haven't figured out what the fuck to do with Harry Kane. A rational move might simply be to walk away from the bet.
But the value on over 2.5 at -128 screams at me here (yes, I hear voices - move on), and I just cant fucking pass on it. Spurs were a defensive nightmare last season, and their solution to that problem was to not buy a center back until the Monday before the season started and to hire a coach who plays high tempo/aggressive soccer. It is an…. Interesting (to put it nicely) approach to say the least, but it isn't the first or the last dumb thing Daniel Levy will do.
So, with a team built to be even more chaotic than last year, it's hard not to drool at that number when Spurs’ matches had a combined 133 goals last season (3.5 GPG). Spurs could probably reach this number themselves, while Brentford could probably find one or two of their own (though not having Toney will hurt). A match that will have chances at the very least, and probably some goals to go along with it.
PICK: Over 2.5 Goals (-128, 1.5 units)
