College Football: Biggest Winners and Losers from Week 5

Week 5 wasn’t as loaded as last week, but College Football always delivers. Georgia survived a scare at Jordan-Hare Stadium, LSU and Ole Miss came right down to the wire, Notre Dame got a gritty win at Duke and so much more happened in Week 5. Here are Dimers’ three winners and three losers from Week 5 of College Football.

Brock Bowers

Auburn didn’t lose to Georgia on Saturday. Auburn lost to Brock Bowers on Saturday. The best tight end in the nation had eight catches for 157 yards and one touchdown. He was targeted a whopping 14 times. 

It’s not that Carson Beck doesn’t have any other options in the passing game. It’s that Bowers is so good that if Georgia doesn’t feed him the ball, they are not performing at maximum efficiency offensively.

Parity

Is there an elite team in College Football? At this point in time, no. Georgia has shown its vulnerabilities, Texas was tied with Wyoming in the fourth quarter earlier this season, Michigan hasn’t been challenged yet and Florida State could’ve lost at Boston College.

Now that we are one full month into the season, October and November could be incredibly chaotic. Could we see a two-loss team make the College Football Playoff? Nothing would shock me based on what’s happened so far this season.

Losers

USC's Defense

The biggest question heading into the season for USC was the defense. That question still looms in Los Angeles as the calendar flips from September to October.

The Trojans allowed 564 total yards, 32 first downs and six touchdowns to Colorado on Saturday. USC was leading 34-7 at one point but only won 48-41. USC does not have a championship caliber defense right now.

New Big 12 Teams

The four new teams in the Big 12, BYU, Cincinnati, Houston and UCF, have been underwhelming so far. Those four teams are a combined 1-7 in conference play. The only win was BYU beating Cincinnati.

The most embarrassing loss was UCF surrendering a 35-7 lead at home against Baylor. The Bears scored 29 unanswered points to win on the road against the Knights.

Florida on the Road

Florida is just a different team when it is on the road. The Gators traveled to Kentucky this week and struggled to stop the run. Wildcats running back Ray Davis gashed Florida for 280 yards and four total touchdowns.

Billy Napier is 1-5 in road games as the Florida head coach. That includes his 0-2 record on the road this season. Florida’s remaining road games this season are against South Carolina, LSU and Missouri.
