College Football: Biggest Winners and Losers from Week 4

Week 4 was loaded from top to bottom. There were six games that featured ranked teams against each other on the Saturday slate. Three of those ranked games provided more clarity to a murky Pac-12 race, Ohio State vs. Notre Dame was an instant classic, Penn State throttled Iowa and Alabama picked up a quality win. Here are Dimers’ three winners and three losers from Week 4 of College Football.

Ohio State and Ryan Day

Coming into the season, there were not many coaches under more pressure than Ryan Day. His team picked up a huge road victory against a solid Notre Dame team with a last second rushing touchdown by Chip Trayanum.

After the game, Day called out Lou Holtz after Holtz made some bold proclamations on Friday about the Fighting Irish’s chances against the Buckeyes. Day looked like a guy that had a massive weight lifted off of his shoulders. If Ohio State goes undefeated this year, we might be able to point back at this win and say that this is where the momentum swing started.

Jake Dickert

Washington State has looked like a formidable team in the Pac-12. The Cougars put up 38 points on a really good Oregon State defense in their 38-35 victory over the Beavers.

After the game, Dickert called out ESPN and Lee Corso in his postgame press conference citing that it was ESPN’s fault that the Pac-12 is now broken up. Week 4 was just full of current head coaches calling out older, retired coaches.

'Bama's Bounce Back

Alabama beat USF by a mere 14 points last week. On Saturday, the Tide won again by 14 points. This time it was against a ranked Ole Miss team that already has a quality win on its resume.

Jalen Milroe isn’t the best quarterback Nick Saban has had at his disposal, but he showed fire and passion against the Rebels. Don’t sleep on the Alabama defense either as they held Lane Kiffin’s offense to just 10 points.

Losers

Colorado's Cinderella Story

Oregon head coach Dan Lanning had America ready to run through a brick wall. He gave an electric pregame speech where he said that Colorado is “fighting for clicks” while Oregon is “fighting for wins.”

His team responded by pounding Deion Sanders and the Buffaloes. The Ducks posted 522 total yards while holding Colorado to under 200 yards. The undefeated streak ends at three games for Coach Prime, but they have to refocus on USC on Saturday.

Dabo Swinney

Florida State vs. Clemson wasn’t just a battle between ACC foes. It was a battle of ideologies. Mike Norvell has built his team partially through the transfer portal. On the other hand, Dabo Swinney has refused to use the portal to his advantage.

Clemson won the stat book but lost the game. The Tigers had the advantage in most statistical categories but lost to the Seminoles in overtime. With the loss, Clemson is 0-2 in ACC play and the Tigers are seemingly out of playoff contention. As the saying goes, adapt or die.

Iowa's Offense

Speaking of the stat sheet, there was no bigger domination on the stat sheet than what Penn State did to Iowa on Saturday night. In front of the White Out at Beaver Stadium, the Nittany Lions held Iowa’s offense to a mere 76 total yards.

Penn State had more yards than Iowa had total plays (33). Iowa didn’t even possess the ball for 15 minutes. That’s less than a quarter. Pure domination by Penn State.
