Week 2 College Football Best Bets for Saturday September 10, 2022
Duke Blue Devils vs. Northwestern Wildcats - 12:00PM ET
We had Northwestern to cover the spread and win outright in the team's Week 0 upset over the Nebraska Cornhuskers in Ireland. And while playing a game in the states after having been overseas can be tough to overcome, we think that Pat Fitzgerald is the perfect head coach to get his team ready. There aren't many coaches on the planet with his ability to motivate his players and get them to execute exactly the way he wants to.
The Wildcats will also be well-rested after having had a week off, so that is an advantage they have over this Blue Devils team. Northwestern's passing game also showed some serious signs of life against Nebraska, which is huge for the season outlook for this program. We knew the Wildcats would be able to run the football, but they'll be able to do it even more effectively if Ryan Hilinski can build off a performance in which he threw for 314 yards with two touchdowns and no picks.
Duke might have won by 30 against the Temple Owls in Week 1, but the team will not be able to stop Northwestern's offense. And the Wildcats defense should have a much easier time slowing down the Blue Devils than they did the Cornhuskers. It might be fun to rip on Nebraska, but the Huskers have a good offense.
It's also worth noting that Duke is just 2-9 against the spread on the road since the start of the 2020-21 season. The Wildcats should win big here.

Memphis Tigers vs. Navy Midshipmen - 3:30PM ET
Navy is coming off of an embarrassing loss to FCS Delaware last week. The Midshipmen were 12-point favorites in that game and they only ended up scoring seven points. It is, however, worth noting that Memphis is also coming off a tough loss, with the team losing by 26 as a 17-point road underdog against the Mississippi State Bulldogs. Of course, losing to an SEC opponent is far less surprising than losing to a non-FBS program, but the Tigers aren't exactly a great opponent.
The Navy defense also happened to look pretty good against the run last week, allowing only 13 yards on 29 carries. Memphis' offensive line should get a little more push than that, but we like the Midshipmen's chances at stopping the run here. And if they can do that, they should have a much easier time against the Tigers passing game.
Memphis is also 0-10 ATS on the road since the start of the 2020 season. And Navy is 5-2 ATS versus Memphis since the start of 2015. It's just hard to see the Tigers going on the road and winning by a touchdown or more.

Iowa State Cyclones vs. Iowa Hawkeyes - 4:00PM ET
Iowa was barely able to beat the South Dakota State Jackrabbits last week, so this is another instance in which we're backing a team that struggled with an FCS opponent. It might be alarming to some that the Hawkeyes weren't able to score a touchdown in last week's 7-3 win (those seven points came from a field goal and two safeties), but South Dakota State is actually supposed to be one of the better FCS teams this year. The Jackrabbits have been to the FCS playoffs 10 years in a row, so that performance wasn't as bad as it looked.
The Hawkeyes defense was actually awesome in the Week 1 win and that unit is really why we like Iowa to win this rivalry game on Saturday. Iowa State's offense is facing a ton of question marks this year, with quarterback Brock Purdy, tight end Charlie Kolar and running back Breece Hall now in the NFL. With an inexperienced group needing to play against this Iowa defense, we just like the Hawkeyes' chances of not giving up many points in this game.
Look for quarterback Spencer Petras to bounce back from last week's dreadful performance and do a solid job of managing this game for Iowa. The Hawkeyes have won six games in a row in this head-to-head series and we just expect them to keep it up.
