I honestly can’t believe it’s over, the 2021 College Football season is over. After the absolute calamity that was the 2020 season, it was incredible to have the full year of games and excitement that were sorely missed during the height of Covid.

While 2020 brought us conferences deciding not to play (but then changing their mind) and some bizarre success stories like Indiana football, nothing can substitute for the real thing and this season didn’t fail to disappoint (well, unless you’re a Texas fan. Then you might be on suicide watch). And, in line with an incredible year, we get a CFP Championship matchup between the undisputed 2 best teams in college football for one last celebration before an 8 month hiatus.

The only thing worse than no college football is having all that time to stew on how you lost your last bet of the season, though, so let’s make some money to ensure we can fondly remember the year that was and start preparing for 2022.

Before we get into my picks, how about this offer from FanDuel Sportsbook? New customers can get 30/1 odds (+3000) on either team winning the Championship game between Georgia and Alabama.

CFB National Championship: Monday January 10, 8PM ET

One of the most interesting aspects of football as a sport is that coaching matters SO MUCH during gameplay.

Sure, coaching has a fairly big impact in other sports but none of them have the same level of in-game control for coaches like football does with calling plays. And, as you guessed, that is exactly where I think this entire game will hinge.

Georgia is a better football team this year, filled with better talent at key positions on the defensive end that makes them more “complete” than the Tide. Sure, Young is better than Stetson and there are some major differences in the offensive production, but in a vacuum the Dawgs win this game more often than Alabama. Unfortunately for them, Kirby fell apart in the SEC Championship and UGA’s defense stopped bringing pressure after one blown coverage, giving Bryce Young all the time he could need in the pocket which allowed him to torch them for 40+.

Simulator: Georgia vs. Alabama

The question is, who wins the mental battle this time? (I’m not sure if that mental battle is Kirby vs Saban or Kirby vs himself, I guess you can decide)

While I’m fully aware of the dangers of trusting UGA in big games (I’m marrying into a UGA family, so also be aware of a possible bias), I think that their coaching staff gets it right this time. Why? Well, for starters, everyone including me pretty quickly diagnosed what went wrong in the SEC Championship, and I think they stick to a game plan that was working (they were up 10-0 at one point) more effectively this time around.

On top of that, Alabama will have to win this game by passing the ball because Robinson isn’t going to be able to run like he did against Cincy when facing this UGA front, and the loss of Metchie is going to really hurt them. UGA won’t be able to completely cap Jameson Williams, but they should be able to limit production with protection from the safeties and then do enough with their frightening defensive front to speed up Bryce.

With that, I like UGA to win and to cover the 2.5 as it currently sits. If things go any higher on the spread I might consider sticking to the Moneyline, but at the current number I’ll sprinkle money on both and pray to any god that will listen that UGA doesn’t collapse again.

Picks: UGA ML (+3000* with FanDuel) & UGA -2.5 (-110)

*odds available to new FanDuel customers only. If you already use FanDuel, we recommend the below sign up offers from BetMGM and Caesars Sportsbook as great alternatives.
