Virginia vs. Georgia Tech Analysis

Why Virginia Will Cover The Spread

Things have just been very ugly for Virginia this season, even in a year that wasn't exactly supposed to be all that great. However, the Cavaliers did have some extra time to prepare for this game, and that could give head coach Tony Elliott some time to get his offense right.

Virginia has scored 17 or fewer points in four of its last five games and it's just very surprising to see the unit struggling like this. Elliott is an offensive-minded coach and he returned a very good quarterback in Brennan Armstrong. Perhaps the time off will allow him and Armstrong to look at some things and try to get back to what was working in previous years.

For what it's worth, Virginia is 3-1 against the spread in this head-to-head series since the start of the 2017-18 season.

Why Georgia Tech Will Cover The Spread

Virginia has lost three games in a row and is just 1-5 ATS on the season. Meanwhile, Georgia Tech has won two games in a row outright and has covered in each of the last three. This team is playing some much better football now that Geoff Collins is gone, and it just shouldn't surprise anybody if the Yellow Jackets stay hot with a win and cover here.

Quarterback Jeff Sims has been really solid in recent weeks, throwing for four touchdowns with no interceptions over the last three games. He has also rushed for a total of 176 yards over the last two weeks, and this Yellow Jackets offense is dangerous when he's taking care of the football and using his legs at the right time. We just aren't quite sure Virginia will be able to get off the field in the biggest of moments, but Georgia Tech should be able to do that with the adrenaline of playing at home.

The Cavaliers are 3-6 ATS when coming off a loss to an ACC opponent.

Why The Over Will Hit

The Over has hit in each of the last two games that Virginia has played, with the team giving up an average of 36.0 points per game in losses to Duke and Louisville in that span. Those offenses aren't exactly bad, but it shows you the state of this Cavaliers defense right now.

It just wouldn't be too surprising if the Virginia defense struggled to keep Sims in check in this game. Also, these teams combined to score 88 points in last year's matchup, and the Over has now hit in each of the last four meetings between these two.

Why The Under Will Hit

The Virginia defense has had a few extra days to try and prepare for this Yellow Jackets offense, so perhaps they'll avoid letting this one get completely out of hand. Also, Georgia Tech's last two games have gone Under the total, so these two are playing different brands of football. But one of them will impose their will on this game, and it very well could be the home team.

The Under is actually 4-2 in games in which Georgia Tech has been favored over the last three years, and it's 1-5 in all Yellow Jackets games this season. We do think they'll move the ball in this game, but they'll do a lot of it on the ground. That'll help the clock run quite a bit.

Virginia vs. Georgia Tech Prediction

Lean: Georgia Tech -3.5

This is a meeting between two teams heading in opposite directions, and the one with all the momentum just so happens to be playing at home. Lay the points and take Georgia Tech.

We strongly suggest taking this with the DraftKings bet $5 to get $200 offer mentioned at the top of this article because, even if the Yellow Jackets don't cover, new customers still get $200 just for joining and placing a successful $5 moneyline bet on the gameYou can claim it ➡️ here ⬅️.
