Texas vs. Oklahoma Analysis

The Spread

Oklahoma had an awful all-around performance against TCU. The defense was terribly bad as it let up 41 points in the first half to the Horned Frogs. TCU gained 668 total yards in the game. First year head coach Brent Venables will need some time to establish an identity at Oklahoma, but that defensive performance was concerning. Look for this Sooners defense to play better this week. After all, they only allow an average of 25.0 points per game.

The Oklahoma offense will also be looking for a bounce-back performance. The Sooners were held in check by TCU. Quarterback Dillon Gabriel had a bad game and was injured. Gabriel is questionable for this game. If he doesn’t play, expect both Davis Beville and Nick Evers to see snaps — but it does look like Beville would play more.

The uncertainty at the quarterback position plays right into Texas’ favor. The Longhorns defense has given up 20 points or less in four of their five games. This defense is significantly improved from last year, especially in the tackling department.

Just like Oklahoma, the Texas quarterback situation is also up in the air. However, the Longhorns have two reliable guys in Quinn Ewers and Hudson Card. Ewers has not played since he suffered a back injury against Alabama. Card has stepped in and performed well, posting a 2-1 record as a starter this season. The Longhorn offense also has plenty of skill players that can tear apart the Oklahoma defense.

The spread for this game is at Texas -7. Oklahoma is in a cold stretch. This is the first time that the Venables-led Sooners have been under major adversity. It's not often that an Oklahoma team loses three games in a row.

We think the Sooners will turn in a better performance this week, but the Longhorns have an advantage at the skill positions, especially considering Oklahoma’s QB situation. The Over/Under

Oklahoma’s QB situation with Dillon Gabriel’s injury could be a deciding factor in the point total. Texas has an improved defense this season, so if Oklahoma has to play Beville or Evers, expect the Longhorns defense to force some turnovers. Both Beville and Evers are inexperienced at the college level.
