College Basketball Best Bets for Tuesday, January 3

Kansas Jayhawks vs. Texas Tech Red Raiders - 7:00PM ET

The Kansas Jayhawks have an argument to be the #1 team in the country when the next AP Poll drops next week, as long as they take care of business until then. That could be easier said than done as they head to Lubbock to take on Texas Tech. Jayhawks forward Kevin McCullar returns to his old program and there will surely be a wide range of emotions for both sides.

The good news for Kansas is that Texas Tech isn't what you have come to expect from the Red Raiders program in recent years. Tech is 0-3 against top 150 opponents on Kenpom this season. They have single digit wins at home against Louisiana Tech, Nicholls State and Eastern Washington and were lucky to survive those games without losing. Kansas is 10-3 against Texas Tech going back all the way to Chris Beard's first year as head coach. We expect the better team to get the win tonight.

LSU Tigers vs. Kentucky Wildcats - 8:00PM ET

This spread surprises me at such a high number. LSU, under first year head coach Matt McMahon, has been very impressive. The Tigers sit at 12-1, with a big win at home against Arkansas in their last outing. KJ Williams, Adam Miller and Justice Hill make for one of the best trios in the SEC, and they play hard with a clear identity at all times.

The same can't be said for Kentucky, who is still searching for answers against quality opponents. In six games this season against KP top 100 teams, the Wildcats have four outright losses, a 4-point win against Michigan and a 10-point win against Yale. Those results don't exactly give me confidence in a Kentucky blowout. Take the Tigers.

Pittsburgh Panthers vs. Virginia Cavaliers - 9:00PM ET

This might surprise people who haven't paid close attention, but Pittsburgh basketball might be....kind of good this season? With four wins vs. top 100 opponents already (in just seven games), the Panthers appear formidable. They are coming off back to back wins at Syracuse and at home against North Carolina, and have proven they can play with anyone. Home court could make the difference tonight as well.

Virginia started the season on fire, but has really cooled off, looking more like last year's version that missed the NCAA Tournament in recent weeks. Virginia has covered the spread in just one of their last seven games. The defense isn't as elite as normal Tony Bennett teams, and the offense is starting to slow down. We like the home team to cover here.
