Why Joel Embiid Will Go Over 33.5 Points vs. Spurs
There's no typo in Embiid's point total for tonight. It's legitimately listed at 33.5 and our predictive analytics model actually thinks that number is way too low. In our 10,000 simulations of tonight's meeting between the Sixers and Spurs, Embiid averaged just about 39.0 points per game. That's easily higher than the 33.5-point total, which makes this a smash spot for the Philadelphia superstar.
Embiid is listed as questionable for the Sixers in this game, but we can't see him failing to hit the 34-point mark if he does end up playing. Earlier this season, Embiid scored 40 points on 14-of-25 shooting against San Antonio — which showed that he was pretty unbothered by the presence of Spurs center Jakob Poeltl, who is a very good defensive big man.
This San Antonio team that Embiid will be going up against is just 28th in the league in defensive rating this season. The Spurs also give up more points per game around the rim than any team in the NBA, and they're coming off a game in which they gave up 74 points at the basket against the Sacramento Kings. With that said, we see Embiid feasting with his low-post opportunities in this one.
Embiid also happens to be in the midst of an intense race for the MVP award, and he's once again battling Nikola Jokic for that top spot. Jokic is coming off of a triple-double (22 points, 16 assists, 14 reboudns) in a win over the Golden State Warriors last night, and that has pretty much wiped away the fact that Embiid outplayed the Joker in their head-to-head matchup just five days ago.
Embiid needs to continue to go out and try and change the narrative, and scoring 40 or more points in a win over the Spurs would be a step in the right direction. We should also mention that our model gives Embiid a 19.7% shot at scoring the first basket in this game. That's our highest probability for any first basket scorer this evening, and you can get him to do so at +250 odds.
