5/14 Forever: Ontario the Test Case for Competitive Online Sports Betting Market in Canada

For the longest time, our neighbors to the north held a prohibition against single-game sports betting.  

This left Canadian gamblers with only the option of parlays, which, as we know, are considerably riskier than a single-game bet. 

This changed last August when federal lawmakers passed the Private Members bill, which ultimately legalized single-game sports betting and allowed the Canadian provinces to conduct and manage it all.

The change is now being added into an iGaming market, which Ontario launched in April that includes single-game sports betting, internet casino and even poker.  

Ontario now allows the major online sportsbooks to compete with one another, and with the city’s lottery gaming corporations, for internet gambling businesses.  

Since May 14, 2018 when the U.S. Supreme Court unlocked legal sports betting in the landmark New Jersey vs. NCAA case, Canadian lawmakers sat back and monitored how it all unfolded down south before making any moves on their end.

With this change in Canada’s gambling laws, Ontario will now offer a very broad assortment of sports that could be wagered on, including all the major professional sports, college sports and eSports.

Ontario has been set up as the test case for a competitive sports betting market in Canada.  

Other provinces, such as British Columbia, could just be expansions of the current lottery system to broaden the legality of sports betting.

In addition, Alberta has declared that it is seeking proposals for retail sportsbooks, as  Saskatchewan officials have announced that they anticipate online sports betting to launch soon.
