2023 Miami Formula 1 Grand Prix: Betting Preview

Following an interminable four week break, Formula 1 returns this weekend for the fourth round of the 2023 season with the Miami Grand Prix. While Baku is an ancient, medieval city, Baku City Circuit is a relative newcomer to F1: 2023 will represent just the sixth running of the Miami GP, which debuted in 2017 with a Daniel Riccardo Red Bull victory. Joining Monaco, Singapore, and Melbourne, Baku is one of just four Formula 1 street circuits, and is utterly unique in the track’s juxtaposition of razor sharp hairpins combined with a singular, endless straight, which facilitates some of the highest speeds F1 fans will see all season. Like Monaco, Baku is unforgiving in the extreme, and would promise a thrilling weekend of racing even without the addition of Saturday’s sprint race to add yet another layer of intrigue.

What’s at stake?

Charles Leclerc just might have salvaged Ferrari’s season with the team’s first podium of 2023 in Azerbaijan. The pressure, however, remains sky high for the Scuderia, and potentially even an underperforming Carlos Sainz. Meanwhile, Mercedes will be looking for a better points finish than last weekend, and could well find it on a Miami track that’s theoretically more favorable to the Merc’s tyre degradation patterns. Aston Martin, and particularly Fernando Alonso, will look to get back on the podium after finishing fourth last weekend, while Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez, now separated by just six points in the race for the Driver’s Championship, battle it out for first on a street circuit better suited to Checo than Max.

Miami Grand Prix Best Bets

Chatter from Mercedes suggests the German automaker is optimistic heading into Miami, largely due to the track’s tyre wear tendencies, which are better suited to Mercedes’ rear-favoring race car than we saw last weekend. -125 are excellent odds for Lewis Hamilton and Geroge Russell to secure a pair of top six finishes: this bet is a prudent, conservative option to build up your bankroll heading into a weekend on a young, unproven track where there are few sure-things.

Both Mercedes Finish Top 6 (-125 with Bet365)

In theory, Sergio Perez is Red Bull’s street circuit specialist, and Miami should be a great opportunity for Checo to secure another crucial victory against teammate Max Verstappen. However, Miami is just a bit too quick, and Verstappen will be just a bit too motivated to come out on top, to feel comfortable betting on either Red Bull driver to take first. What does feel exceedingly likely is both RBs battling fiercely all afternoon, just like we saw in Azerbaijan, and finishing the race within five seconds of one another, hence the appeal of +175 odds for a winning margin under five seconds.

Under 5 Second Winning Margin (+175 with Bet365)

If there’s one thing Charles Leclrec demonstrated last weekend, it’s that given even a marginally competitive car, the Mongasque is ready, willing, and able to dominate qualifying. Add to that that Ferrari is rolling out upgrades that seem specifically designed to provide the Scuderia a boost cornering Miami’s hairpins, and +225 starts looking awfully attractive for Leclerc to qualify on top once again.
