2023 Monaco F1 Grand Prix Betting Preview
When?
Qualifier: Saturday, May 27th, 10:00 am E.T.
Race: Sunday, May 28th, 9:00 am E.T.
Where?
Circuit de Monaco—Monte Carlo, Monaco
What’s at stake?
At just 3.337 kilometers, the Circuit de Monaco is by far the shortest track on the F1 calendar. More pertinently, it’s both the slowest and least conducive to overtaking, with endless hairpins, and nary a single straightaway. As a result, the 2023 Monaco Grand Prix likely represents the best chance any non-Red Bull will have at winning an F1 race all season, as Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez’s enormous DRS advantages will be neutralized, opening the door for street-circuit aces such as Charles Leclerc or Fernando Alonso to steal pole position, then parlay it all the way to the victory. Toss in the thrilling spectacle of Formula 1 racecars blistering down narrow, cliff-hanging streets overlooking a French Riviera packed to the gills with super yachts and champagne, and it’s clear why Monaco is Formula 1’s most anticipated event, year in and year out.
For Max Verstappen - the current Driver's Championship leader with a 14 point buffer over his teammate Sergio Perez - not much is at stake. For everyone else, everything is at stake. While Verstappen, the two-time defending Drivers’ Cup Champion, would surely love to secure his second career victory in Monaco, the track favors neither his driving style nor racecar, and the Dutchman will have plenty of opportunities to make up any points lost this weekend the rest of the year. By contrast, for Verstappen’s teammate Perez, a genuine street-circuit specialist, for Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, a native Monegasque with a history of terrible luck at his home GP, for Fernando Alonso, a 2023 podium fixture whose Aston Martin’s only chance of beating a Red Bull is racing on a track without straightaways, the 2023 Monaco Grand Prix represents the highest stakes weekend of the season.

Monaco Grand Prix Best Bets
Due to the challenges of overtaking on the Circuit de Monaco, the driver who qualifies first carries an enormous advantage. As such, it’s an oddity that Charles Leclerc, who took pole in Monaco in 2021 and 2022, losing those races due to factors entirely beyond his control, has odds of just +175 to take pole, but a whopping +550 to win his home grand prix. For a two-time Monaco pole winner whose Ferrari excels in slow corners, +550 for a Leclerc victory seems awfully appealing.

Racing a lightning quick Aston Martin, Fernando Alonso has podiumed in four of five F1 races this season, and finished fourth in the lone outlier. Repeatedly, the Spaniard has hinted at high hopes for a superior finish in Monaco, and even if the presence of Leclerc, Perez, and Verstappen renders an Alonso victory unlikely, -105 for a fifth podium in six races, on a track that suits Alonso’s racecar perfectly, are great odds.

Last year’s Monaco champion, Sergio Perez could well run it back in 2023. The trouble is, odds of +270 for a Perez victory are a bit too short in a field this competitive. -200 for a Perez podium, however, represents great value, and the perfect safety wager for those betting on Leclerc, Alonso, or even Verstappen to win it all.
